Hi, I’m Sara, the founder of Kelpy Bone.
I’m an environmental scientist, dog mum to Cisco and Lenny, and a big lover of the outdoors. After years of seeing plastic pollution scattered through the places I love,and worse, finding bits of microplastic in my own yard and even coming out the other end of my dogs, I knew I couldn’t just wait for the big companies to fix it. So, I decided to do it myself.
That’s how Kelpy Bone was born, from my little bus in rural Australia, with a mighty mission: to create healthier products for pets that don’t harm them or the planet. We put so much thought into what we feed our dogs, but their toys? They’ve been left behind. Working in the environmental sector, I’ve seen the endless research showing plastic is harmful, wasteful, and toxic to both us and the environment. It didn’t sit right with me that our pups were expected to gnaw on toxic lumps of plastic.
Enter Kelpy Bone, the world’s first compostable dog toy, crafted from seaweed with the help of our friends at Notpla.

Why We Exist
Pet toys are a hidden problem. They’re almost always made from plastic or synthetic materials that break down into microplastics, polluting our homes, harming our pets, and filling up landfills. Kelpy Bone exists to show there’s another way: products that are good for your dog and the planet.
