We started Kelpy Bone with a simple belief: dog toys should be safe for our pups and kind to the planet. Unfortunately, most toys on the market are made from plastic—and that comes with problems that reach far beyond the toy box.

Plastic might be cheap and durable, but it comes with a serious environmental cost. It’s made from fossil fuels like oil and gas, and once produced, it never really goes away—it just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. Those microplastics end up in our oceans, our soil, our food chain, and yes, even in our pets.

Globally, millions of tonnes of plastic are dumped into the environment every year, and our oceans take the brunt of it. Marine animals mistake plastic for food, seabirds get tangled in it, and entire ecosystems are being disrupted. Choosing more sustainable materials isn’t just “nice to have”—it’s urgent.

Seaweed is one of nature’s quiet superheroes. Unlike plastic, it doesn’t require drilling or mining to produce. It grows naturally in the ocean, doesn’t need fertiliser or fresh water, and doesn’t compete with farmland. Even better, it actively helps the environment by absorbing carbon as it grows, playing a role in fighting climate change.

By using kelp as the base for our bones, we’re creating toys that are renewable, ocean-friendly, and much easier on the planet.
